The impact of constipation on both individuals and the healthcare system is underestimated. It is seen as a low priority by many despite affecting the quality of life for sufferers. Many treatments exist but they may be poorly utilised without a clear treatment pathway. This article highlights the financial impact of constipation and introduces a treatment pyramid to guide treatment options and service pathways.
