Vulnerable to leakage

Introduction

There are many priorities when managing the care of the Ostomate with overall goal to help establish a new normal life, where their stoma does not hold them back. The impact that leakage has on people establishing their new normal, in particular the worry about leakage, is an emerging area of understanding.

The emotional impact of leakage

The negative emotions associated with experiencing leakage, particularly in public places, cause many patients to limit their social activities and even self-isolate.1 They are also more likely to contact their HCP more often4 and use more baseplates and supporting products.1,

As a Stoma care nurse there are few resources available to help address this. The worry and behaviours developed during leakage can remain even after an optimal product solution is found.

In 2024 Coloplast will be introducing Heylo to the UK, the world's first leakage notification system, that will put Ostomates back in control of their body.

Over the next few months we will be updating the information here, however if you would like more information ...
