AMR & Wound Care Practices
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a natural process that happens over time, but has been accelerated due to:
- Misuse and overuse of common antibiotics
- Poor infection control practices
- Lack of new antimicrobials being developed 1,3
As a result of drug resistance, antibiotics and other antimicrobial medicines become ineffective and infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, disability and death.
AMR is one of the top 10 global public health and development threats and is listed on the UK's risk register. 1, 2
- It is estimated AMR is directly responsible for 1.27 million global deaths in 2019. 1,2
- As AMR continues to increase more people will suffer from prolonged infections and therefore an increase on hospital stays. 2
As a result of AMR topical antimicrobials are increasingly being used in wound care practices. The approach to combat this is known as Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS). 5
We need to act now! by 2050, 10 million people will die every year due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) unless a global response to the problem of AMR is mounted. 3
AMS is important in wound care as multidisciplinary working is common, necessitated by variations in the complexity and variation of wound care 4
It is critical that our practices minimise the possibility of micro-organisms developing resistance 5
- Healthcare Professional and Patient education
- Changing traditional practices and processes
- Accurate assessment
- Treatment options with a physical mode of action
- Increased awareness
A consistent approach is required.
Equipping non-wound care specialists and patients with tools to support AMS practices can establish consistency across care settings. 4
Five Rights of Antimicrobial Stewardship
- Right Diagnosis and Care Plan
- Right Antimicrobial and delivery system
- Right Time to initiate antimicrobial treatment
- Right Antimicrobial Dose
- Right Duration of antimicrobial treatment
