Patient details

A 52-year-old female patient with a history of IVDU and mental health problems presented with multiple venous leg ulcers (VLUs). Wound duration was indicated as at least 7 years, with a possible duration of 16 years.

Improving the patients quality of life

The patient is known to have a history of non-compliance and multiple wound management regimens. A total of 32 wound swabs were taken and the patient had completed 48 courses of antibiotics. The patient’s quality of life was significantly impacted, having to wear two pairs of trousers to hide exudate and odour.

In alignment with The Coloplast 3 Step Approach, the patient was assessed in twice weekly appointments with the Tissue Viability Project Lead; the wound was prepared with Alprep® Pad; the wound was treated with Biatain® Alginate Ag and Biatain® Silicone.

See Figure 3–5 for wound progress during this time. Following implementation of The Coloplast 3 Step Approach and the patient participating in supported self-management, there was a 70% wound reduction. The patient also no longer felt that they needed to wear multiple pairs of trousers due to a reduction in exudate and odour.
