Not all convex products are the same
To ensure a convex baseplate can provide a secure and predictable seal to prevent leakage and support peristomal skin health, an expert group of clinicians agreed on 5 key characteristics defining a convex ostomy solution.3 These characteristics work together to conform to the stoma shape, adapt to body movements, and apply and distribute the needed pressure on peristomal skin with creases and folds.3
Flexibility and compressibility in action
A more flexible convex baseplate will conform to peristomal contours,
especially around the stoma. A softer convex baseplate compresses more
easily for more flexibility, while a less compressible convex baseplate
provides more stability.3

A mirror image of the peristomal plane through depth and slope
The right balance of depth and slope, determined by the peristomal skin creases and folds and stoma position, is essential to create a mirror image of the peristomal plane and ensure a secure seal.3

Tension Location positioning is key3
The size of the convex shell decides tension location – either help the stoma protrude or help flatten creases and folds in the peristomal area.
Tension close to the stoma helps it to protrude above skin level.
Tension further away from the stoma helps to flatten creases and folds in the peristomal skin.

Choice of 1-piece or 2-piece
The choice of ostomy product depends on preference, lifestyle, age, and medical condition, which may change over time.
A 1-piece system can be beneficial if there is a need for a flat product profile and/or a one-step change routine.
A 2-piece system can be beneficial if there is a need for longer wear time and protecting skin from frequent baseplate changes and/or changing between bag sizes without changing baseplate.
To adapt to changing needs, periodic individual assessment is recommended.
