Ostomy masterclasses and events for healthcare professionals

In this section, you can view a breakdown of the ostomy masterclasses and events currently running for stoma care nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Pre operative siting

Pre operative siting can be seen as one of the first advanced practices developed by a stoma nurse. It is a vital skill that sits at the very heart of stoma care nursing. Being able to fully assess and document the siting process is a legal requirement and needs to underpinned by the latest evidence and recommendations. This Masterclass provides that evidence and enables you to learn and practice in a safe and supportive environment

In this interactive masterclass, you will:

  • Explore the evidence and theory underpinning stoma siting
  • Work in small groups to site patients, taking into consideration all aspects of their personal history and medical issues
  • Participate in group discussion on challenges and key issues associated with each of the four patients
  • We use actors and virtual reality to simulate real-life scenarios to support and enhance your learning experience

Peristomal skin complications and management

The management of peristomal skin complications is one of the most common duties of a stoma nurse. In this interactive Masterclass we will discuss the causative factors leading to many of the common peristomal skin conditions and discuss their management and treatment. We will explore the evidence and rational behind these treatments and how we should be documenting our findings.

In this interactive masterclass, you will:

  • Explore evidence and guidance surrounding peristomal skin disorders
  • Focus on clinical management of skin conditions and the evaluation of skin improvement to enable you to demonstrate impact and value of your expert intervention
  • Work in groups to develop nursing care plans to support practice within your clinical area
  • Participate in group discussion on key learning points from the day

Mitigating the physical and psychological effects of stoma leakage

We know that stomal complications such as leakage are common and approximately 50% of your clinical time is spent dealing with them. These complications can have a devastating effect on individuals who live with a stoma and with the continual burden of illness. By highlighting and exploring the physical and psychological effects of leakage we will be better placed to support our patients.

In this interactive masterclass you will:

  • Explore the challenges in clinical management of ostomates related to complex stoma management
  • Identify how body profiling can aid and support your clinical decision making
  • In groups identify effective, practical management strategies in simulated real-life scenarios
  • Participate in group discussions on key learning points from the day

Writing an abstract and engaging presentation

Have you ever wanted to present at conference but nerves got the better of you? Have you done something you think is worth shouting about? Have you got an idea but don’t know what to do with it? This Masterclass is for you!

  • ASCN UK and Coloplast Professional have been long standing partners in the “New Presenters Award” with none other than the current Chair of the ASCN UK Andrew Bird being a former winner. The New Presenters Award is a fantastic way in which the ASCN UK and Coloplast Professional can support stoma care nurses in showcasing best practice, patient centred care and service development.

  • The “Writing an abstract and engaging presentation masterclass” (formally New Presenters) is an amazing opportunity for you to showcase yourself and your service. You will be guided and supported throughout the process of abstract submission, presentation writing and face to face support on the big day itself.

  • This is a virtual masterclass split over 2, 2 hour sessions as well as continual personal support during the entire process

Speaking up for your service and proving your worth

Specialist nurses are expert clinical practitioners; but in today’s healthcare environment may need support with business skills that effectively showcase their services. A survey of specialist nurses undertaken by Coloplast highlights a lack of training around business skills, report writing and service development planning. Therefore, when asked by managers to undertake a service review or provide activity data about their service, many nurses feel unsure of how or what to do and the whole process becomes stressful and negative, rather than the positive opportunity to showcase their service. This Masterclass is a must for any new clinical lead and succession planning

In this interactive masterclass you will:

  • Explore the tools which can be used to speak up for your service
  • Identify how these tools can be utilised to support you in proving both your and your services worth
  • In groups identify key challenges and who these challenges can be overcome
  • Participate in group discussions on key learning points from the day

High output stoma and fistula management

Managing high output stomas and fistula can be a daunting prospect for even the most experienced of stoma care nurses. This Masterclass will provide you both the theory behind managing these complex and sometimes seriously ill patients as well as hands on practice in high output stoma and fistula management.

In this interactive masterclass, you will:

  • Explore evidence and guidance for both the acute and long-term management of enterocutaneous fistula
  • Work in groups to develop nursing care plans to support practice within your clinical area
  • Participate in group discussion on key learning points from the day
  • We use ‘real-life’ simulations special-effects prosthetics, actors to simulate real-life scenarios to support and enhance your learning experience
