- Consider the status of the wound (healing, deteriorating, infected, etc.) and estimated frequency of dressing changes
- Protect the wound edge and periwound skin from trauma and maceration
- The dressing should be able to absorb and retain exudate
- When local infections are present consider a dressing with an active
component (i.e. silver, honey, iodine, PHMB) - Consider patient comfort, lifestyle, and ability for self care
