Peristeen Light is a low-volume transanal irrigation (TAI) device and is an alternative method to manage patients with bowel dysfunction that present difficult-to-manage symptoms. It works by introducing lukewarm water into the rectum to clear out stool that could be causing symptoms of constipation or faecal incontinence.

How transanal irrigation can help your patients, Jane Young, Community Bladder and Bowel, Nurse Consultant

Who is it for?
Peristeen Light can be prescribed for adults and children over three years of age that are having difficulty managing their bowel dysfunction.
Symptoms and other considerations:
- Clustering (multiple evacuations in quick succession)
- Defecation difficulty
- Incomplete defecation
- Passive incontinence of faeces, mucus or flatus
- Post-defecation leakage
Conditions:
- LARS
- Ileo anal pouch
- Rectocele (posterior vaginal wall prolapse)
If patients are seeing little or no improvement in their bowel dysfunction when using conservative management such as lifestyle changes or laxatives, you may consider trying a low-volume transanal irrigation device as a next step in their treatment.

I just have that control back. I think that’s the biggest moment of joy.
